SUMMER NEWS FROM THE PLAYLES

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2010

Yes,we thought we would mention the word 'SUMMER', as it does seem that we have sunshine at the moment!  As we prepare this newsletter we have just enjoyed a week's break in and around Stratford-on-Avon and the weather was really good.  We probably ate too much (hotel breakfasts are so inviting), but we are back on the diet now.

While we were away we attended a ceremony at Marlborough Barracks, Kineton, where our grandson Iain graduated as an Ammunitions Technician, along with his colleagues. He looked very smart and is really enjoying army life. Iain got engaged recently to Ruth, who was the youth worker at All Saints Marple, the church Iain attends in Stockport.  We don't yet know the wedding date, but look forward to it.  Congratulations Iain and Ruth!

PORTUGAL

Yes, we finally made it abroad, after being 'grounded' for a whole year!  Chris Bowater's Worship Academy is taking place in different parts of the world, and he invited us to do some teaching at the Portuguese Academy, near Lisbon, over the weekend of 14-17 May. Despite some delays due to an ash cloud that never was, our trip was really fulfilling, and it was great to meet the 20 students from different churches, who were keen to learn.  Dave spoke on 'Loving the Church' and 'Servant Leadership'.  Together we also shared our personal story, outlining our journey from our conversion in 1962, but also telling how we had met and married in 1959.

The Portuguese Academy is led by Luis Goncalves, who has served in the Portuguese Navy for 20 years as a Sergeant Musician. Visitors to Grapevine Celebration will have seen him on the main platform playing trombone. As well as his Naval commitments, Luis has enjoyed the privilege of travelling and playing with famous names such as Pavarotti, visiting many different countries.  He is about to retire from the Navy, but, along with two military colleagues, he has been appointed as a Chaplain, to serve the armed forces, hospitals and prisons in Portugal.  His appointment ceremony took place in Bucharest, Romania, soon after we were with him.  Luis has also started a new church, meeting in the very spacious garage which occupies the ground floor of his house, and Dave preached there on the Sunday.  Staying with Luis and his family meant we didn't have any distance to travel to get to the service!  We look forward to further visits to share in this new venture.  Our photo shows us with Academy students.

FUTURE PLANS

Travel overseas will be put on hold even further as Rosemary goes into hospital on 21st July for a hysterectomy, which requires a 12 week recovery period. We still haven't had our holiday to celebrate our Golden Wedding last August, but are hoping to do that towards the end of the year.

Meantime our diary is pretty full, as you can see from the diary dates at the end of this newsletter, including a mid-week series which Dave is doing at our home Church on the life of the apostle Peter.

We really appreciate those individuals and churches who support us financially, making it possible to do what we do, so a special 'THANK YOU' to them. One church even doubled its monthly support while Rosemary was in hospital last Autumn, as a sign of their love and commitment to us, which was a real help.
