What we do

Our ten-year vision is to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 local churches.

We take a comprehensive approach to releasing people from poverty, working through a network of local church partners to bring about truly sustainable change.

With our church-based partners around the world, we're focusing on five broad issues: defeating disease, preparing for and responding to disasters, campaigning for economic justice and enabling fair trade, working for a sustainable environment and providing basic services.

We don't make distinctions - we give aid where it's needed, not on the basis of race, creed, nationality or gender. Our aim is to tackle poverty with justice and compassion; to empower poor people and restore communities.

HIV

Thanks to access to drugs, Berta is living with her HIV, not dying with it.

According to current estimates, nearly 33 million people are living with HIV, a virus that is devastating communities across the globe. Our aim is to stop and reverse the impact of HIV where we work by 2016. We're supporting those affected, promoting access to health care and treatment, and tackling the stigma so often associated with the disease.

Tackling disasters

2004: The boxing day tsunami in south Asia killed almost 300,000 people. Tearfund disaster response teams have been helping with the recovery ever since.

When disasters strike, it's poor communities who suffer the most. We're working with vulnerable people to prevent, respond to and recover from disasters. We're experts in helping communities prepare for disasters, as well as being there to respond when they happen, dealing with the practical and emotional trauma they bring.

Challenging injustice

We're standing up again injustice wherever we find it.

We're campaigning as the local and global church at regional, national, and international levels to challenge and change unjust policies and practices that keep people in poverty. We're working to ensure fairer trade laws, lobbying for good governance, fighting corruption and empowering communities to stand up for themselves.

Restoring the environment

The desert is encroaching in the Sahel region in Niger as the climate hots up.

In the midst of climate change, we're always concerned with creating a sustainable environment where we can, crucial for poor people dependent on its resources - water, crops, fish, for example. Our programmes include helping communities adapt to climate change, adressing environmental degradation, and tackling water and food shortages.

Water, sanitation, basic services

Access to clean water is vital to survival but so many people don't have the most basic of services.

While 1.1 billion people live without clean water, basic services are the essentials of lifting people out of poverty. Ensuring access to education, good healthcare, sanitation & water are all vital to halving poverty by 2015. We're focussing on
water and sanitation, education and literacy, livelihoods, health & nutrition.

In all our work we adhere to internationally recognised standards and commitments that govern our code of conduct.
